Dryden doubles up Wisconsin

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs scored twice on the power play, and added a couple more while shorthanded, to help them double up the visiting Wisconsin Lumberjacks 8-4 Saturday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Arena.

Dryden began the evening’s scoring midway through the first frame on Malcolm Huemmert’s fifth marker of the season.

Down a skater a couple minutes later, Dylan Winsor’s man-down effort put the home side up by two.

Wisconsin got on the board at 16:51 as Tyler Montoya collected his first of the season to cut into the deficit.

The GM Ice Dogs power play made it 3-1 courtesy of Curtis Magas in the latter stages of the period, but Cade Moreland did answer that for the Lumberjacks with eight seconds remaining.

Moving on to the second stanza, Dryden outscored Wisconsin 3-1 in the session with Mark Walchuck tacking on a pair while Justin Pitari added a single, while shorthanded, with Jack Jones collecting the goal for the Lumberjacks during a power play.

Jones added his second extra-man effort with four and a half minutes remaining in regulation to bring the guests closer.

However, Dryden sealed the outcome as Huemmert put one into an empty net with 50 seconds left.

Luke Golka then rounded out the scoring in the final moments as he picked up his first in the SIJHL.

Dawson Rattai made 32 saves in a winning cause for the GM Ice Dogs while Wisconsin starter Matt Fitzgerald had 34 stops in defeat.
