Dryden ties it late; then edges Thief River Falls in shootout

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs tied the game with a second to go in regulation then won it in a shootout as they rallied to edge the Thief River Falls Norskies 5-4 Saturday evening in front of nearly 1,200 fans in a thrilling Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Dryden picked up the lone marker late in the opening frame on a Sam Marit marker at 19:08.

Logan Jackson tied it for Thief River Falls four minutes into the second stanza only to see Mark Sanchez notch his first SIJHL goal for the GM Ice Dogs at 14:38 while his side was shorthanded.

It was a wild third period that began with Braedyn Aubin putting the visitors up 3-1 thanks to a power play tally at 3:19.

The Norskies then stormed back with three consecutive efforts to go up by one with Tommy Stang, Michael Johnson and Connor Smith all connecting in just under a three-minute span.

Then with time winding down and the period set to expire, Dryden got the equalizer in dramatic fashion as Nic Noseworthy forced overtime with a buzzer beater.

Going three skaters aside in a five-minute OT solved nothing so extra shots were required to determine a winner.

In the shootout Derek McPhail and Aubin, with the decider, scored for Dryden while Reily McIntosh had one for the home side.

Thief River Falls out shot the GM Ice Dogs 34-28 with Patrick Zubick picking up the win while Ryan Buttazzoni helped his side pick up a point in the setback.

The same two teams meet again Sunday at 5 p.m. back at The Ralph.
